Alphonse Mucha / Giovanni Boldini
Exhibitions
During spring 2025, Palazzo Diamanti will exhibit the masterpieces of the two protagonists of European Art between the 19th and 20th century, Alphonse Mucha and Giovanni Boldini, extraordinary artists of beauty and feminine charm
An artist of Czech origins, Alphonse Mucha (Ivancice, 1860 - Prague 1939) he achieved international fame in fin-de-siecle Paris. Although he is known worldwide for his posters for the shows of the famous actress Sarah Bernardt, Mucha was multifaceted and versatile: in addition to being a painter, designer and illustrator, he was also a photographer, set designer, interior designer, jewel creator and packaging designer.
His works soon became emblematic for the nascent Art Nouveau, to whose he continued developing an unmistakable and seductive style (known precisely as "The style Mucha"), as demonstrated by Gismond (1894), The series of the seasons (1896), Job (1896), Reverie (1897), Médée (1898). When he visited for the first time the USA in 1904 the Press celebrated him as " The greatest decorative artist in the world".

The great monographic exhibition is about the biography, the artistic path and the many aspects of Mucha's production, of which it was firmly continued that the beauty and the inspirational force of art could promote progress of humanity and to grant peace and the union of peoples.
Graceful and elegant women were the undisputed protagonists of Alphonse Mucha's works, but also of Giovanni Boldini's (Ferrara, 1842 - Paris, 1931) that, as the Czech artist, he lived permanently in Paris, where he established himself as a wordly protraist, highly sought by a wealthy international clientele. The rooms of the Tisi wing of Palazzo dei Diamanti will host a significant selection of paintings, drawings and engravings dedicated to the theme of the portrait and the female figure coming from the Museum Giovanni Boldini, the most important public collection of works by the great Maestro from Ferrara, that will reopen in the renovated Ferrara complex of Palazzo Massari in 2026.
Alongside the masterpieces such as "The lady in pink" (1916) and "Fireworks" (c. 1890), the exhibition will feature full-length studies of women and individual female faces that document hyperreactive relationship of the artist with the surrounding reality, as well as his ability and readiness in recording poses and attitudes which would then serve him to give vitality and dynamism to his paintings. characterized by the peculiar, extremely rapid and at the same controlled writing which makes his style unmistakable and unique.
