The Bosco della Panfilia is a protected wildlife sanctuary formed around three centuries ago as a result of the hydrological changes of the River Reno.

Covering approximately 81 hectares, it lies within a wide bend of the river’s floodplain and is periodically flooded when water levels rise. Panfilia is a classic example of a hygrophilous lowland forest, featuring typical floodplain vegetation including oak, white poplar, ash, white willow and elm, along with field maple, white mulberry and shrubs such as dogwood, blackthorn, hazel, hawthorn and elderberry.

The forest is home to rare mushroom species and the highly prized white truffle. Wildlife includes birds such as blackbirds, starlings, hooded crows and jays, as well as mammals like hares, hedgehogs, dormice, moles and foxes.

How to get there – By car: Take the A13 motorway and exit at Ferrara Nord. Follow signs for Modena (SS255) and continue for about 20 km. After passing Sant’Agostino, turn left onto Via del Cavo. The woodland lies about 3 km south of the village.
