Looking at a map of Ferrara, the city appears to be rich in green spaces, and in the north-east, one can see a vast, unbroken area of open land. This is the “Campagna dentro le mura” (Countryside within the Walls), a wonderful haven of peace stretching across some four hectares of fields, vegetable plots and gardens.

Situated between the Jewish Cemetery and the Certosa Monumentale, this area is managed by associations and farms committed to using farming techniques that minimise environmental impact whilst preserving biodiversity. It is also the ideal spot for walks, bike rides, relaxing breaks or picnics.

You can reach the Countryside within the Walls through a cycle/pedestrian path that connects to the city walls, or by following Via delle Erbe, which leads from Piazza Ariostea to this magnificent green oasis.

This area was incorporated by the architect Biagio Rossetti as part of his innovative urban renewal plan, the so-called “Addizione Erculea”, which made Ferrara the first modern city in Europe.

The idea behind this urban green space was to provide the city with an internal agricultural supply area, so as to make it self-sufficient and autonomous in the event of a siege.

This space has been preserved for over 500 years and in 1987 the Municipality of Ferrara purchased it, ensuring its protection.
