There are five main roads crossing the province of Ferrara
A13 Bologna-Padua motorway with the Ferrara Nord and Ferrara Sud exits; to reach Cento, the San Pietro in Casale exit in the Bologna area is also useful.
Ferrara-Porto Garibaldi Motorway Junction: it connects to the Ferrara Sud exit and crosses the province from west to east (excluding the Alto Ferrarese area), providing easy access to Voghiera (Gualdo exit), Masi Torello (Masi S. Giacomo exit), Portomaggiore (San Vito exit), Tresignana and Jolanda di Savoia (Rovereto exit), Fiscaglia and Codigoro (Migliarino exit), Ostellato (Ostellato exit), Lagosanto (Corte Centrale exit), Comacchio (Comacchio exit) and the Lidi di Comacchio (end of the junction-Porto Garibaldi, with access to the SS. 309 Romea).
SS 64 Porrettana: starts in Ferrara (where it is called Via Bologna) and heads south-west to Bologna and then, through the Apennines, to Pistoia. It connects Ferrara to Poggio Renatico (with a detour after Chiesuol del Fosso on the SP 8).
SS 16 Adriatica: it comes from Padua and connects Ferrara to the Po River and the province of Rovigo through the bridge over the river at Pontelagoscuro; it continues south of Ferrara towards Ravenna and the other towns on the Adriatic coast, providing good connections within the province to Voghiera, Portomaggiore and Argenta.
SS 309 Romea: it originates in Ravenna and connects the towns located along the eastern border of the province from north to south. From Mesola, on the border with Veneto, it descends southwards, passing through Pomposa and near Goro, Codigoro, Lagosanto and Comacchio, where it joins the Ferrara-Porto Garibaldi motorway link. The Romea state road is the main link between the seven beaches of Comacchio.
The towns in the Ferrara area and their hamlets are connected by a dense network of provincial and municipal roads. Among the main ones are the SP 66, which connects Ferrara, Vigarano Mainarda, Mirabello, Sant'Agostino and Cento, and the SP 69 - SS 496 Virgiliana between Ferrara, Bondeno, San Benedetto, Mantua and the SS 255 to Modena.
