Mandorlini del ponte
Mandorlini del Ponte - “mandurlin dal pont” in Ferrara's dialect - are delicious traditional biscuits from the province of Ferrara, specifically from the small town of Pontelagoscuro, from which they get their name.
Made with few simple ingredients - almonds, egg whites, sugar and flour - these treats are baked in the oven until crunchy and fragrant, and decorated with almonds. The result is a flavourful and slightly toasted biscuit, perfect for wine and coffee.
There are different versions about their origin.
According to tradition, they were prepared for the first time in 1857, when Pope Pius IX visited Ferrara.
According to another legend, they were first cooked by an ice-cream boy, who decided to use some extra egg whites to create a new recipe.
Regardless of their true origin, Mandorlini del Ponte are a sweet symbol of Ferrara's tradition, they are still prepared in local bakeries and can be found at local food events and festivals.
