Ferrarese Watermelon
Ferrarese Watermelon is one of the traditional Summer fruits of the area and has ancient history.
Between 1300 and 1500, watermelons were already being used in the dishes of the Este Court banquets.
Still today, the cultivation of watermelons has an important role in the agriculture of the area, spreading all over the province. In time, farmers have learned how to select the best varieties depending on the soil, enhancing the unique qualities of each area.
The Crimson Sweet variety is grown mostly in the peaty, high clay content soil of areas like Bondeno, Berra, Jolanda, Ostellato and Argenta. The Sugar Baby variety is grown in the sandy soil found at Codigoro, Mesola, Lagosanto and Comacchio.
The water melon is a typical summer fruit with high water but low sugar content and is an excellent thirst quencher.
Symbol of conviviality and simplicity, watermelon represents an authentic pleasure of the summer in Ferrara, bringing to memory the genuine taste of the countryside.
