Dosso Dossi
(Mirandola 1486 - Ferrara 1542)
Giovan Francesco Luteri (1486 ca-1542) was probably born in Mirandola and his nickname Dosso Dossi came from some mistakes made by historians who confused his name with one of his family houses near Mantova.
Dosso spent most of his life in Ferrara, starting from 1512, as painter of the ducal court, working for Alfonso I and Ercole II. He was not only a painter, but he also built theatre scenographies, created wallpapers and painted decorations on the princes' majestic boats. He carefully studied the developements of art and travelled to learn more about the different influences. His fame grew fast and he was also called outside of Ferrara, for example at the Villa Imperiale in Pesaro and in Trento's bishop's apartments in the Buonconsiglio castle.
Dosso created masterpieces that were both sacred and profane, in which he experimented his techniques, colour and light works.
