Fifty years after the release of The Passenger, Spazio Antonioni celebrates one of the great director's greatest masterpieces with a selection of photographs from the film and the set.

Starring Jack Nicholson and Maria Schneider, The Passenger is one of the most admired, intense and relevant films by the great Ferrara-born director, thanks to its ability to open a window onto a globalised world devoid of reference points. Reporter David Locke, played by Nicholson, is confronted with the impossibility of attributing objective meaning to the events he witnesses.

In an illusory escape from himself, the protagonist travels between Africa and Europe in the company of an architecture student (Schneider) he meets along the way. Their wanderings end in Osuna, Andalusia, with the inevitable showdown. Antonioni dedicates a masterful sequence shot of over seven minutes to this moment, guiding the viewer's gaze through the room of the Hotel de la Gloria, where Locke awaits his fate, before exiting through the window to observe the epilogue from outside. The viewer, in turn, experiences the impossibility of grasping the substance of reality.

A selection of still photographs by Florian Steiner – from the Antonioni Archive – accompanies the viewing of the final sequence, which is considered a cornerstone of cinema history.
