Voghiera

The town grew up along the river Sandolo, no longer in existence, in the vicinity of the Este palace of Belriguardo, which in its day was one of the grandest and most luxurious palaces of Renaissance Italy. Traditionally a holiday retreat for high society, over the centuries its territory was enriched by villas and patrician homes, including, in the 18th century, the summer residence of the Papal Legates of Ferrara. Voghiera is practically united to Voghenza, one of the oldest villages in the province of Ferrara: it was the administrative centre of the area at the times of Imperial Rome, in particular under Trajan, and an important bishop's see in the Middle Ages, until the cathedra was moved to Ferrara in the 12th century.
